Foreign Affairs

Brazil and Equatorial Guinea established diplomatic relations in 1974. The Embassy of Brazil in Malabo was inaugurated in 2006.

In the last few years, visits of high level authorities have contributed to boost relations. In 2009, the Basic Cooperation Agreement between the two countries entered into force. The Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the Government of Equatorial Guinea are studying the possibility of implementing cooperation projects in the areas of family farming and sports.

Several Brazilian companies operate in Equatorial Guinea, notably in civil construction. Bilateral trade has recorded significant amounts, chiefly due to oil imports by Brazil.

1974 – Brazil and Equatorial Guinea establish diplomatic relations

1994 – Visit of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Equatorial Guinea to Brazil

2002 – Visit of the Minister of Mines and Energy of Equatorial Guinea to take part in the World Petroleum Congress

2004 – Meeting between President Obiang and President Lula at the 5^th Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries - CPLP

2005 – Visit to Brazil of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pastor Michá Ondo Bilé. Opening of the resident Embassy of Equatorial Guinea in Brasília (August)

2006 – Brazil establishes its resident Embassy in Malabo (first semester); visit of President Obiang in the multilateral context of the 2^nd Conference of African Intellectuals and the Diaspora, in Salvador (July)

2007 – President Obiang announces that he would adopt Portuguese as third official language, to satisfy the prerequisites to join the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP)

2008 – President Obiang visits Brazil and meets President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (February)

2009 – The Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Miguel Jorge, visits Malabo and Bata (June); the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celso Amorim, visits Malabo and Bata (October)

2010 – Visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (July 5)

2011 – Visit to Equatorial Guinea of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, to participate in the Africa-South America (ASA) Ministerial Meeting (November 24-25) [Joint Communiqué]

2012 – Visit of President Obiang to Brazil, to participate in the Rio+20 Summit (June)

2013 – Visit to Brazil of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Equatorial Guinea, Agapito Mba Mokuy (January 23-24)

2013 – Visit of President Dilma Rousseff to Malabo to participate in the 3^rd Africa -South America Summit (ASA) (February 22)
